Though every class has a specific topic which is covered in detail, each class will also cover nutrition, exercise, positive communication, and coaching. Different relaxation techniques will be discussed or demonstrated and assigned for practice each week. Classes frequently feature a film or video presentation.
Class 1. Introduction to Natural Birth and Planning Your Birth
This class deals with birth history, philosophy and goals. It is a time to get to know us and the members of your class. During this class, we will begin to study things you can do to keep yourself healthy and low risk during pregnancy. We will introduce important pregnancy exercises and we will lead a discussion of how to handle pain and give a lesson in how to avoid unnecessary pain in labor. We will also start you working on understand the consumer information out there and how to make a birth plan. We will discuss: what your choices are, the importance of evaluating your feelings and listing your priorities, and meeting with your medical team to discuss your choices in a positive way.
Class 2. Nutrition in Pregnancy
This class is taught while you enjoy a candlelit dinner provided by us. The primary focus is on nutrition. We will discuss good nutrition during pregnancy so that you will understand which nutrients are important and what quantities are necessary. We will help you to evaluate your diet and suggest ways to improve it if necessary.
Class 3. Gestation and the Psychology of the Unborn Child
During this class, we will discuss the many changes your body goes through during pregnancy. We will focus on anatomy and physiology as well as common discomforts and how to handle them naturally. This is helpful for the coach as it makes him more aware and therefore more understanding of these changes. We will also discuss the life of the unborn child and the impact of their gestation period.
Class 4. First Stage Labor
This class is on how your body works in first stage labor and transition. We will cover anatomy and physiology of first stage, stressing our respect for the natural process and examining the built-in safeguards for you and your baby. We will teach basic coaching techniques and instruct you on how to practice together.
Class 5. Second Stage Labor
This class is on how your body works in the second and third stage of labor. We will cover the anatomy and physiology of second stage labor stressing our respect for the natural process and examining the built-in safeguards for you and your baby. We will discuss the importance of the natural alignment plateau and the fetal Heimlich maneuver. Basic pushing techniques and second stage positions, as well as the coach's role, will be covered.
Class 6. Coach's Role
This class focus on childbirth from the coach's point of view. In this session we will discuss: coaching during labor, the importance of natural childbirth, bonding, and the father's role in breastfeeding. We will conclude our study on staying low risk during pregnancy and discuss drugs, myths and birthing.
Class 7. Interventions, Part 1
This class covered the interventions that many mothers and babies experience in labor and how they effect each other. We will cover cesarean sections, epidurals, inductions and augmentation, pain medications, epsiotomiesand more. We will also look at the differences such as long labor vs short labor, breech babies and multiples and the challenges they may produce, and back labor.
Class 8. Interventions, Part 2
This is the continuation from the week prior.
Class 9. Postpartum Family
Class nine is all about the first few days after the baby is born. We will discuss the baby and their needs. We talk about common tests and treatments for baby and discuss the pros and cons to them. Then we will discuss the changes mom goes through and how to recover even from a healthy natural birth. Tips and tricks will be offered on how to make the transition smooth and the role dad can play and be included in the bonding.
Class 10. Nursing
This class is all about nursing your new baby. The healthiest food for your child is breastmilk and yet many moms find themselves quitting on nursing early one. This class will go over the basics of nursing, positions, helpful tools and dietary needs for mom. We will also go over the role dad can play to help mom feel she has the support to continue on the days when she feels overwhelmed.
