Once upon a time, a young couple who were very much in love, made a vow to each
other. A vow of love, honor, and faithfulness. They also promised to welcome into their home, children from God. So four months after their vows, their first child was growing in the mother's belly. The couple was told their baby would be born on the 16th of November, plus or minus two weeks. The pregnancy was beautiful and the couple's love for each other grew stronger as the baby grew larger.
The 16th of November came...and then it went...with no sign of the baby..save for the very large extension of the mother's belly. A couple more days came and went when the 20th of November arrived, the day of the father's own birthday. The mother promised the father she would have the baby that day. She went to work, told her boss and her students she was having a baby that night. No one believed her—not even the baby.
The night came and it slowly went, soon it was the next day—but barely. It was 1:00am and the mother suspected the baby was getting ready to begin it's decent into the world. An hour later, she was convinced and woke the soon-to-be-daddy and told him to get ready. The mother took turns pelvic rocking on an exercise ball, laying on her side and then soaking in a warm tub until 6am. The contractions were close, about 3.5 minutes apart and lasting 60 to 90 seconds. Her water broke while she was in the tub, but having no experience in this before, she did not recognize this. By 7am the mother and father made their way to the hospital.
The fifteen mile drive took a bit longer since they were heading into downtown Minneapolis during rush hour, a factor that could have been given more thought to. Upon arrival at the hospital, they met with the Midwife on duty, a very nice lady who did everything for the couple that they requested. However, when she first saw the mother, she did not believe the mother was very far along in the labor for the simple fact that the mother and the father worked so well together that it did not appear as if the mother was in pain normally associated with labor.
Upon checking the mother's cervix, it was discovered that she was 8cm dilated and completely effaced. The midwife and nurse assigned to this mother were so surprised at the way the mother was handling the labor they asked if two nursing students could observe, for the simple fact that they may never see another natural childbirth like this again.
About an hour later, the mother was ready to push her baby out. After pushing for about 45 minutes, the baby was born. One contraction pushed the head out and barely another contraction had the entire body out. The baby was immediately handed to the mother where she and the father discovered the sex of the baby— boy—and introduced to the room, their son, Stephen Paul Davis!

11 years later!
I am thankful for my oldest son, who made me a mom, and was given the gentle, forgiving nature needed as I figure out what it takes to BE a mom! As he gets older, he continues to bless me by stepping into the leadership role of the first born, teaching and showing his younger siblings just how to do it! I am so lost when he's away, even for a day! |
