The best way to achieve a natural birth is to prepare!

A natural birth, isn't as easy to achieve as it should be. Our current healthcare system makes natural birth challenging to achieve. Therefore, if this is your goal, you have to do your homework.

Your homework should include:
  • A childbirth preparation class, one that is taught independent of the hospital system, like the Bradley Method (r) classes.
  • Finding support groups in your area that support natural birth and natural living. These groups and their members can often help you find healthcare practitioners that support the goals of a family seeking a natural birth.
  • Education through reading. There are many parenting, pregnancy and birth books out there and unfortunately many of them are not worth your time to read. This is a good thing, though, because you wouldn't have time to read all of them even if you wanted to!
  • Most importantly, you must always remember that your health care provider, whether it is your family doctor, a specialist such as an OB/GYN or your local midwife is a paid consultant, your paid consultant and though you have hired them for the expertise they have in a particular area, you are the ultimate expert on yourself, your family and your child. Like all relationships with consultants, you have the right to use the advice given or to seek additional or different advice.
The links in this area will help you find support groups in your area, books that may help you on your educational journey, application to my Bradley Method (r) classes and occasionally handouts for my current students. Please browse around. If you find links not working or have suggestions to add to my resources, please e-mail me at jlcdavis@laborforlove.com. I love to find new resources.
